Skilled to Build – why have we been shortlisted?
TrustMark, the not-for-profit, UK government-endorsed quality scheme, partnered with Eureka! Research to produce a White Paper ‘Skilled to Build’, addressing the UK’s chronic shortage of skilled tradespeople. The campaign aimed to give voice to the small and micro businesses in the RMI sector and inform policy makers and industry bodies in line with TrustMark’s strategy of building coalitions to drive change.
The research focused on the RMI sector, surveying an eye-watering 1,233 tradespeople, which is a ground-breaking response from this difficult-to-reach audience. The findings directly informed four key policy recommendations: engaging future talent, simplifying recruitment, improving access to funding, and transitioning to green skills. A notable finding was that 55% of tradespeople surveyed are nearing retirement and are willing to mentor new talent, including women and ethnic minorities.
With a modest budget, the campaign has already achieved significant results. A 56-page White Paper was launched at a high-profile Parliamentary event attended by over 100 senior stakeholders; a follow-up webinar drew 244 participants. Press coverage reach already exceeds 580k and social media activity has generated over 54k impressions. The success of the campaign has resulted in senior staff engaging directly with Parliamentarians, establishing the organisation as a key voice in the sector.
