Case study: Warwick University Student Union

Review of on-campus food and beverage outlets

The challenge

Having a high-quality food and beverage offer is a critical part of the university experience, not only for students but also for staff and other visitors. This is particularly the case for Warwick University who also frequently receive a wide range of visitors due to events at the Warwick Arts Centre.

Xananas restaurant is a well-established part of the offer on campus that was deemed in need of reinvigoration to maximise its potential. It was also important to understand how Xananas is perceived in the context of other food and drink outlets in the vicinity that are used for breakfast, lunch, and dinner occasions.

The solution

The primary focus was on learning what customers currently think of Xananas although we also collected feedback on the wider food and beverage offer on campus. We wanted to give as many students and staff the opportunity to have their say as possible.

An online broadcast to all undergraduate and postgraduate students, and university staff, across the university was arranged firstly. This was open for two weeks and over 725 surveys were completed. To capture ‘in the moment’ thoughts, postcards were also made available to customers in Xananas, The Dirty Duck and Curiositea.

Finally, to gain additional feedback from Xananas customers a short programme of intercept interviews were conducted by Eureka! researchers. These were scheduled to capture customers during the breakfast, lunch and evening periods. In total this gave us a very healthy number of interviews to conduct thorough data analysis and make practical recommendations.
