Case study: Salamander Pumps

New product development in the Plumbing & Heating sector

The challenge

Salamander Pumps are a UK based manufacturer of domestic shower and whole house pumps and are always exploring ways of introducing more innovative products. As a brand in this category, they need to mindful of the changing nature of heating systems across UK housing stock and respond with appropriate products accordingly.

Salamander asked Eureka! to devise a research study with plumbers and heating engineers to understand attitudes and interest to a series of potential new products for the Plumbing & Heating sector. Additionally, the sessions were designed to understand more about how businesses in this sector make purchase decisions.

The solution

A hands-on experience with the professionals who will actually fit these products was called for. We convened a series of focus group discussions with heating engineers, plumbers and installers to deliver this important project. Business owners were screened prior to the sessions to ensure they matched with our target audience definition. We also have a range of tricks up our sleeves to ensure that this difficult-to-reach target group turn up at the agreed time and place!

The sessions were held at informal venues where tradespeople feel more at home and the client could observe discreetly. By ‘talking their language’ we made the groups casual and lively, deploying a variety of qualitative techniques which allowed us to gain informed feedback on the concepts being considered. The practical feedback will now allow the Salamander Pumps team to further refine designs in the NPD process.
