Challenging the traditional builder's merchant
We’ve completed a number of notable projects this year delving deeper into the role of the merchant in the lives of the UK’s tradespeople. It’s a sector that has remained stubbornly traditional, reliant, as it is on customer relationships and entrenched in long standing supply chains sometimes managed in an antiquated fashion.
The sector has a core of major players who have dominated for a long period of time and with the high barriers to entry, few new entrants have taken on the task of entering or trying to disrupt the category. But in this digitally enabled world where builders can check and compare prices on their smartphones at any time of day, how long before the traditional approach is disrupted by a truly omni-channel offer that mimics what is happening in the wider retail space?
So, we were extremely excited when we were recently selected to work with BUILT/ (https://www.built.co.uk/) on a customer focused research study. They are trying to do things differently, being a digitally-enabled builders merchant based in Birmingham. Open seven days a week, BUILT/ uses an eCommerce platform to power both its in-store and online business.
